If you haven’t figured out by now that I am all about the farm to fork movement, then you probably haven’t been reading my blog for very long! One of the more recent additions in the Triangle to the farm to fork, or farm to table movement is Venable Rotisserie Bistro in Carrboro.
Andrew Moore (known as Drew), one of the owners of Venable, stopped by our table and told us that Venable was actually the name of the town before it became Carrboro. The restaurant is located in the Carr Mill Mall, and each wall has historical black and white photos on it, that are placed approximately in each direction of where the photos were taken in town. That is a really nice tribute to the history of the town. The restaurant also used some recycled barn timbers in the restaurant. It certainly has that warehouse and historical feel to the place.
I started my meal with a cup of the puree of artichoke, which was very subtle and creamy with a hint of lemon. Very fresh tasting and calming.
The main meal was a camponata sandwich, which had eggplant, red peppers, onion and olives with arugula and a generous portion of goat cheese all rolled up in a toasted sub roll. The peppers and eggplant were bursting with flavor and the goat cheese gave the sandwich a nice tang. The arugula gave the sandwich a little peppery flavor as well. Yum!
My husband had a Caesar salad, which was a typical Caesar with Romaine lettuce, anchovies, shaved Parmesan and home-made croutons. What’s not to love in a simple salad when you are in the mood to eat a salad?
Our friends both had the Bahn Mi sandwich, which is a Vietnamese sandwich with pickled daikon radishes, crispy tofu, sliced cucumbers and a miso mayo sauce and lemon vinaigrette.
So none of us had a chance to try the famous rotisserie chicken or any of the other meat dishes. Would love to hear your comments on whether they are any good!
