MJ's sign out front

MJ Raw Bar and Grille is in downtown New Bern.

I love coming to downtown New Bern and strolling along the sidewalk, looking at the old buildings and talking to the friendly local folks. This is one dog-friendly town as well, so when my husband and I went there recently, we took our dog with us and had lots of people greeting us mainly so they could pet our dog.

We were hungry and it was about lunch time when we got into town, so we decided to try out MJ’s Raw Oyster Bar and Grille which as a few outdoor seats in front of the restaurant. When we first arrived, the outdoor seating was taken, but the hostess took our cell number and called us when a table was ready, which allowed us to go shop in the downtown area for a few minutes. Once seated, our waitress was nice enough to bring our dog some water and remarked how cute she was. Everyone at the place was really friendly and helpful.

Crab cakes with fries at MJs

Yummy crab cakes from MJ’s.

My husband ordered the crab cake sandwich, which was broiled and made with a little Old Bay, much like you would get in Maryland. The crab was very meaty and had just a bit of filler to keep the cake together.  It was served with a Jamaican tartar sauce, which tasted a lot like a spicy Thousand Island dressing. The sandwich came with cole slaw and was served on a Kaiser roll.

plate iwth fish taco wrap and steamed veggies

Fish Taco Wrap from MJs in New Bern.

I tried the fish taco wrap, which was some white fish that was fried and rolled in a tortilla. It came with some avocado mousse, cabbage and cheddar cheese and was served with a mango salsa. It had a lot of flavor and was not too heavy, yet I was more than full after eating  the wrap. It came with a side dish. I decided to have the mixed vegetables which were steamed, so I could keep my meal a bit on the healthy side.

I really enjoyed this place and think that it’s a great choice next time you are visiting New Bern. They had a lot of other seafood dishes, such as crab, oysters and fish, and had plenty of choices if you are a land lover, including burgers, wraps and salads. They also had some of the football games on TV in the bar area in the back of the restaurant, so some people gathered there to watch  the games.

MJ’s Raw Oyster Bar and Grille is located at 216 Middle Street in New Bern and is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. You can follow them on Twitter or like them on Facebook to find out what the special of the day is.

Moved from Chapel Hill to New Bern at the beginning of the year but have been coming to MJs for years – our fave. Glad you noticed how friendly (and dog friendly!) our little town is. :)

Pete and I ate there a few months ago and really enjoyed it. Good food. Reasonable prices. Good service. We will definitely stop by again. It is also on one of our favorite downtown streets with nice shops along the way.
